Over the fourth of July weekend, I took you on your very first camping trip! Well… actually I guess the proper term is “glamping” since there were no tents involved. Regardless of what you call it, it was a fun weekend with your Nana and Pepaw at Mother Neff State Park.
We made the hour and half trip up I-35 to the park which is located just outside of Temple, TX. Although Mother Neff State Park is one of Texas’ earliest state parks, this year they recently opened a new visitor center complete with the park’s history. The park is along the Leon River and you can hike, picnic, camp, fish, swim, geocache and observe nature. Unfortunately due to the recent heavy rains, the river access was closed, but we made due with our own fun!
First, we had lunch and pretended to drive Pepaw’s 38′ diesel pusher! Hence where the glamping comes in!
Next we checked out the park, but it was way too hot to play on most of the park’s jungle gym so we did a little swinging while Nana checked out the park map to find out where to explore next.
Nana found a few hiking trails, one of which led to the park’s wash pond. But before we hiked down to the wash pond we made a pit stop so Pepaw could teach you how to water the bushes! A right of passage in a young man’s life.
Once at the wash pond, Pepaw taught you how to skip rocks on the pond.
And then, how to start a fire with your magnifying glass. You know… just in case you ever find yourself lost in the middle of the forest and you need to start an SOS fire.
Later that evening we roasted marshmallows to make s’mores! Which of course you didn’t want to try. Kid, you’ve got to learn to try new foods! You just don’t know what you’re missing! Note to self… bring a MUCH longer skewer. Fire is HOT!
And then you passed out.
The next morning featured pancakes and hot wheel car crashing!
I sure did have a good time on our first camping trip! Even if you did wake up at 2AM and exorcist vomit all over your pjs and bed. I don’t know about you, but THAT was definitely the highlight of the trip for me.
